Imagine a tree that was a young sapling at the weather, when Khan Asparuh stuck his sword across the Danube. A tree that survived the storms of Pirin while Bulgaria went through the Golden Age of Simeon, Ottoman rule and two world wars.
This is not a movie plot. This is Baikusheva mura – the oldest coniferous tree in Bulgaria, which awaits you just a short trip from the center of Bansko.
If you're planning a hike in the mountains, here's everything you need to know about this living phenomenon.
Giant's ID card
The Baykush pine is not just a large tree. It is a natural phenomenon of its kind. black pine (Pinus heldreichiiThis species is known as the "armored inhabitant" of Pirin because of its bark and durability.
-
Age: Over 1300 years old (equal to the Bulgarian state).
-
Height: 26 meters (as high as an 8-story building).
-
Trunk circumference: Almost 8 meters – it takes 6-7 people holding hands to wrap around it.
-
Location: 1930 m above sea level.
Curious detail: Pay attention to its bark. It is cracked into large, hard plates, resembling crocodile skin or the mail of a medieval warrior. This "armor" protects it from the icy winds and fires.
The Legend: The Guardian of Bulgaria
The locals in Bansko tell a story that makes the encounter with the mura even more exciting. Legend has it that Khan Kubrat had a favorite mura tree in his old homeland. When he died, his faithful gardener named Baykush took seeds from it and set off with Asparuh to the west.
When he reached Pirin, Baykush sowed the seed and uttered the prophecy: „"As long as this pine tree grows, Bulgaria will have it too."“
Although science says that the tree is named after its discoverer - forester Konstantin Baykushev (who discovered it in 1897), the legend of the gardener Baykushev gives the place a special mystique.

Tips for the perfect photo and etiquette
Special wooden stairs and a platform have been built around the tree.
-
Best light: Late afternoon, when the sun shines softly through the branches of the forest.
-
Protect the roots: Please use only wooden grates! The roots of the murra are extremely valuable and sensitive. Trampling the soil around them prevents the tree from "breathing".

Without souvenirs: Don't break off pieces of bark as a keepsake. Let's keep this thousand-year-old guardian alive for our great-grandchildren.
