The entire route is about 125 km long and takes approximately 5 hours one way, making it a great day trip for guests of Bansko and the region. If you're planning a vacation in the mountains and looking for activities to take the kids away from their phones, a small train traveling along narrow gauge tracks will give them memories to last a lifetime. In this guide, we'll look at the best sections, what to pack, and how to turn your trip into a real fairytale.
How long does it take and where to travel from?
The entire journey timetable from the first to the last stop takes about 5 hours, with the train passing through key stations such as Velingrad, Yakoruda, Razlog and Bansko. However, five hours can be a serious challenge for the patience of younger travelers. That's why we have selected the most suitable sections according to the age of the children:
1. For the little ones: Bansko – Dobrinishte (or vice versa)
If you are staying in the Bansko area and your children are very young (under 4-5 years old) or have never been on a train, this is your perfect test route. The Bansko – Dobrinishte section is extremely short, comfortable and takes only about 30 minutes. It is often offered as a special tourist trip, especially when BDZ launches its retro steam locomotive compositions during the summer season or on holidays.
2. The Golden Middle: Velingrad – Yakoruda
This section takes between 1.5 and 2 hours and passes through the very heart of the mountain. Here the views are the most picturesque - the train winds through deep gorges and passes through most of the 35 tunnels on the line. It is on this section that Avramovo station is located - the highest railway station on the Balkan Peninsula (1267 m above sea level).
3. The Romantic Defile: September – Velingrad
If you are traveling from the interior of the country (for example, Sofia or Plovdiv) to the mountains, you can leave your car at Septemvri station and enjoy an hour and a half journey to the SPA capital of the Balkans. The route through the Chepino Gorge is extremely beautiful and passes unnoticed by children.
💡 Useful advice for parents
Prepare the children in advance! Show them pictures of the powerful locomotives and tell them a brief history of the railway. That way, the very act of climbing the steps of the carriage will become part of the legend and an exciting adventure, not just another boring means of transport.
What should you definitely take in your backpack?
Traveling with Narrow gauge Septemvri Dobrinishte is an authentic experience. This means that the carriages are retro inside and they do not have modern amenities like a restaurant car or vending machines. Good preparation guarantees peace of mind for everyone.
- Impressive “picnic box” and water: Be sure to prepare your favorite sandwiches, sliced fruit, pickles, and plenty of water. Eating on the train at the small wooden tables is always an adventure for children.
- Layers of clothing: Even in the height of summer (July or August), when the train enters the mountain gorges and the windows are open, it can get quite chilly. A light jacket or sweatshirt is a must.
- Sun protection: Hats and sunscreen are a must, especially if you are planning long walking tours around the terminal stations.
- Hygiene kit: Wet wipes, dry towels, disinfectant, and a small first aid kit (patches for scratches) are a must.
⚠️ Important about tickets
During weekends, national holidays and active tourist seasons, the train is extremely popular. Be sure to purchase your tickets in advance online through the BDZ system or from a large train station (like the one in Bansko) to guarantee seats with your children.
Games and entertainment: How to keep their attention?
Children have a limit to their patience, but with a little creativity, the hours on the train will fly by. Here are some tried-and-true ideas for fun on the road:
- Treasure map: Draw or print a simplified map of the route. Mark the key stops (Velingrad, Avramovo station, Yakoruda, Razlog, Bansko). Give the children the task of “crossing out” the stations when you reach them.
- Tunnel Counting: This is an absolute hit! There are exactly 35 tunnels on the line. Let the race to count the most tunnels begin with the conductor's signal.
- Game “Who saw first…”: Set goals for the little explorers looking out the window. Who will be the first to see a cow in the meadow? A waterfall? A horse and cart or a small mountain village?
- Art workshop on rails: Bring a sketchbook and colored pencils. The changing landscapes outside your window are great inspiration for drawing mountains, forests, and trains.
How to turn it into a complete family adventure?
A trip on the narrow gauge railway can be just the beginning of a wonderful day. Combine it with local activities for a “reward” part after the journey is over.
If you are traveling towards Bansko and get off at the final station in Dobrinishte, be sure to visit one of the local outdoor mineral pools. The warm water will perfectly relax the children after the trip.
If your final destination is Bansko, you can stroll along the cobblestone streets of the Old Town, eat in a traditional tavern or take the cable car to Banderishka meadow. In the summer, a huge children's entertainment complex with inflatable castles, the longest water slide in Europe, and playgrounds is built there.
