The transition from Vihren hut to Demyanitsa hut is one of the pearls in the crown of Pirin. This classic route connects two of the most popular valleys in the mountain – Banderishka and Demyanishka, offering tourists a panoramic journey past six of the most beautiful glacial lakes in the Balkans.
This is the route for connoisseurs – it does not require extreme alpine skills like “The horse“", but offers equally impressive views. It is suitable for tourists with good physical fitness who are looking for a moderate load, combined with the feeling of infinity that only a high mountain can give.
📊 Technical passport: H. Vihren – H. Demyanitsa
Detailed description of the route by stages
The hike can be roughly divided into three main stages, each with its own character and challenges. The terrain varies from rocky paths and scree in the higher part to gentle forest trails at the end.
Stage 1: Ascent to the Banderishki Lakes
The adventure begins at Vihren hut (1950 m). The trail, following red and green lane markings, winds south against the flow of the Banderitsa River. The beginning is relatively smooth, allowing the body to get into a rhythm.
You will pass the fork for Muratovo Lake (on the right), after which the trail enters the picturesque circus of Banderishki Lakes. Here you will enjoy a view of the Fish Lake – one of the largest in the group. The culmination of this stage is reaching the Frog Lake. This is a key landmark and a place for a short break. Be careful – here the paths split: one continues towards a shelter Tevno Lake, and your goal is left and up towards the saddle.
Stage 2: Crossing Todora Gate (Premkata)
From Zhabeshkoto Lake comes the most difficult physical part of the route – a short but steep climb over rocky terrain to the saddle. „"Todor's Gate"“. This is the highest point of the trek (2575 m above sea level), located between the peaks of Todorka and Malka Todorka.
⚠️ Important for safety: This section is very exposed. In bad weather, fog or strong winds, crossing the saddle can be dangerous and disorienting. Always check the forecast before setting off!
The effort is completely worth it. From the "gate" a majestic view opens up back to the marble peak of Vihren, and ahead the gaze sinks into the blue of the Vasilashki Lakes, guarded by the proud Polezhan peak.
Stage 3: Descent through the Vasilash Circus
From the saddle begins a long and picturesque descent to the Demyanitsa River valley. The trail passes right next to two of the emblems of Pirin:
- Tevno Vasilashko Lake: Known for its deep, dark blue color, it is one of the deepest lakes in the mountains.
- Upper Vasilashko Lake: Located a little lower, among moraines and squat.
As you approach your final destination, the landscape changes dramatically. From the raw alpine rock you enter the squat area, and soon after – into the centuries-old coniferous forests. The path becomes wider, softer and flatter, winding along the river until it takes you directly in front of the Demyanitsa hut.
Demyanitsa Hut: The Final Goal
Located at 1895 m above sea level, at the confluence of the Vasilashka, Valyavitsa and Gazeyska rivers, Demyanitsa hut is a hospitable home for every tourist.

Water, shade and mobile coverage
💧 Water
The route is rich in water – you pass by numerous lakes and rivers. Despite the clarity, grazing animals in the higher parts make the water potentially unsuitable for direct consumption. The use of filter bottles or purification tablets is highly recommended.
☀️ Shadow
In the first 2/3 of the route (until you get below the Vasilashki Lakes) the terrain is open and exposed to the sun. You will find shade only in the last stage, when you enter the forest belt above the Demyanitsa hut. Wear a hat and sunscreen!
📱 Mobile coverage: Coverage is variable. Around Vihren hut and on the high Todora Gate saddle, the signal is usually good (4G). In the deep cirques around the lakes and in the dense forest before Demyanitsa hut, the connection is often lost completely.
Tips from the mountain guide
- ❄️ Late Fall / Early Summer: Be careful of the snow drifts that linger for a long time (until July) on the northern slope of Todora Gate from the Vasilashki Lakes. They can be hard and slippery.
- 🥾 Equipment: High boots with grips are mandatory (due to the slippery stones around the lakes), poles for the long descent (they spare your knees), and a windproof jacket for the saddle.
- 🚌 Logistics: Please note that Demyanitsa Chalet is not accessible by car. From there to Bansko You will have about another 3-4 hours of walking on a forest road, unless you spend the night there.
Are you ready for Pirin?
The route from Vihren hut to Demyanitsa hut is an experience you will remember for a long time. Bring patience for the climb and a camera for the lakes!
