“I walk like a penguin”: How to avoid muscle soreness after Vihren? (And how to treat it)

A tourist rests after a hike and relaxes in a mineral pool in the village of Banya near Bansko.
Anyone who has ever taken a hard fall from Vihren or Kutelo knows this feeling. The next morning, getting out of bed is a mission impossible, and walking down the hotel stairs turns into a comical dance that the locals call the "Pirin walk.".

Pirin is a steep mountain. Unlike the gentle slopes of Vitosha or Stara Planina, here the elevation gain is sharp, and the descents are endless. This puts a strain on the muscles in a specific way. But does the mountain have to hurt? Here's how to reduce the damage and why the "preventive pill" is a bad idea.

1. Why does Pirin “hurt” so much?

Many people think that muscle soreness comes from climbing. Wrong! The real quadriceps killer is the dip.

When you descend steep terrain, your muscles work in the so-called. eccentric mode – they stretch under tension to act as the body’s “brakes” against gravity. This causes thousands of micro-tears in the muscle fibers. The inflammation from these micro-injuries is what you feel as pain 24 to 48 hours later (the so-called DOMS effect).

2. Prevention: How to NOT get to this point?

There is no magic solution, but there are tricks to reduce the pain by up to 50%:

A. Use poles (correctly!)

As we wrote in the previous article, poles are your best friends. They take some of the weight off your back when you go down. Important: Extend your poles by 5-10 cm when descending and lean on them before you step with your feet. This way your arms take the impact, not your hips.

B. Descent technique

Stop rushing down. Running on scree is fun, but the impact is huge. Descend in small, soft steps, keeping your knees slightly bent (springy), not locked and straight.

⚠️ Warning: The “Aspirin Before Departure” Myth”

Many tourists take Aspirin, Ibuprofen or Paracetamol before the transition, hoping to prevent pain. Doctors advise NOT to do this! Here's why:

  • Kidney hazard: The mountain dehydrates the body. When you combine dehydration with Aspirin or Ibuprofen, you put extreme strain on the kidneys and can cause acute renal failure.
  • Masking injuries: Painkillers dull the body's signals. You might sprain an ankle or sprain a ligament, but not feel the pain right away and keep walking, worsening the injury many times over.
  • Blood clotting: Aspirin thins the blood. If you fall and get injured on the sharp rocks of Pirin, it will be much more difficult to stop the bleeding.

The right approach: Save the pill just for after the transition and only if the pain is unbearable.

3. It hurts now: What should we do? (SOS measures)

Woke up and can't move? Here's a plan of action:

Mistake #1: Complete rest

The worst thing you can do is lie in a hotel room all day. This allows waste products to build up in your muscles and makes them even stiffer. You need to Active recovery.

Bansko Recovery Plan:

Method Why does it work? Where in the area?
Mineral pool Warm water (36-38°C) improves blood circulation and relaxes tissues. village of Banya or Dobrinishte (5 km away)
Cold shower / River Reduces acute inflammation (best immediately after disembarking). In the hotel or mountain stream
Easy walk “"Pumps" blood through the muscles without strain. The City Park or the “Kiosks”

Magnesium: Gel or powder?

Magnesium is the king of recovery.

  • Internally (Powder/Pill): It helps the nervous system and sleep. Take it at night before bed.
  • Externally (Magnesium Gel/Oil): Rubbing magnesium directly onto the thighs and calves has a faster local effect for relaxing stiff muscles.

4. Food: Fuel for Repair

Immediately after the transition (in the so-called “golden hour”) your body is screaming for resources. Beer is a nice reward, but it dehydrates. Before it:

  • Protein: The bricks with which the body “builds up” the micro-tears in the muscles. Eat eggs, meat or plant protein.
  • Antioxidants: Berries (blueberries, raspberries) help against inflammatory processes.

Conclusion

Muscle soreness is a sign that you've done something good for yourself, but it shouldn't cripple you. The key to Pirin is: Use poles when descending., don't take pills beforehand and in the evening after the summit soak in the mineral pools of the village of Banya. Your body will thank you!
