For the mass tourist, Bansko is slopes, lifts and the Tomba slope. But for thrill seekers and freeriders, the real magic begins where the markings end. The legendary The cups under Todorka are perhaps the most famous, but also the most treacherous off-piste areas in Pirin. Located directly below the majestic peak, they attract like a magnet, but often turn into a trap.
They are the embodiment of the classic freeride dilemma: easy access, but extremely complex and risky exit. Before you take your skis or board down, you need to be aware of the geography of the area.
Geography of adrenaline in Chashite pod Todorka
„The "cups" are huge glacial cirques descending from the ridge. Choosing the wrong direction here is not just a navigational error, but a potential threat to life.
1. The Western Slopes (Towards Banderishka Polyana)
This is the more popular and “safer” country from a logistics perspective, but don't underestimate the terrain.
- Terrain: Steep gullies at the top that open into wide fields and pass into a sparse forest.
- Output: With the correct trajectory, these slopes naturally lead back to the slopes (usually to the “Platoto” or ski road for The Shiligarnika).
- Risk: High avalanche danger in the upper part, especially after new snow and wind.
2. The Eastern Slopes (Towards Demyanishka Valley) – “The Trap”
This is the area that requires the most attention. Here are the so-called "Small" and "Big Cup" on the side of the Demyanitsa hut.
| Element | Characteristics of Eastern Cups |
|---|---|
| The lure | Endless white fields with a perfect slope and preserved “powder” (shady side). |
| The Long Walk | The descent NO leads back to the lifts. It ends deep in the wild valley of the Demyanitsa River. |
| The Exodus | Requires knowledge of “escape chutes”. Risk of falling into impassable vegetation, waterfalls and rocks. Followed by a long, flat walk to the road for Bansko. |
Why are they so dangerous?
Besides the logistical nightmare of getting out, The cups under Todorka hide objective deadly risks that every freerider must respect:
The slope is between 30° and 45° – the perfect angle for snow boarding. The wind often carries snow from the west to the east side, forming treacherous “visors” right at the entrance to Chashite.
Since the lift is close, many unprepared skiers decide to “go for it” without an avalanche transceiver, probe, and shovel. This is a fatal mistake.
At the bottom, the terrain narrows into a funnel shape. During an avalanche, the snow accumulates to a great depth right there, making survival almost impossible.
The golden rule of safety
If you decide to drive in this area, follow strict discipline:
- 1. Never alone: Freeride is a team sport.
- 2. Required equipment: PIEPS (avalanche device), probe, shovel and ABS backpack are the minimum.
- 3. Knowing the route: For the Eastern Cups you need to know exactly where to “cut” the forest. Be prepared for at least 40-60 minutes of walking to the exit.
- 4. Checking the conditions: Always follow the bulletin of the Bulgarian Avalanche Association (BAA) before setting off.
The cups under Todorka are the pearl of Bulgarian freeride – beautiful and large-scale. But they do not forgive ignorance. They are “tempting”, but the price for a wrong decision can be very high. Be sensible in the mountains!
