What is the "Plateau" in Bansko? A guide to the most beautiful part of the ski area

If you are planning a ski vacation in Bansko or are already here, there is no way you have not heard the phrase: „"We are climbing up to the Plateau"“. For locals and regular skiers, it's a code name for the best part of the mountain. But for the novice hiker, the term can sound abstract.

What exactly is the "Platoto", where is it located, and why is it a favorite spot for skiers? Here's everything you need to know.

Where is it located and what is it?

„The "plateau" is the highest part of a ski center Bansko. It is located at the foot of Mount Todorka, at an altitude between 2200 and 2550 meters.

Its name is not accidental – unlike the steep and narrow gullies typical of Pirin, the relief here is relatively flat and open. This is the zone above the forest belt. There are no pine forests here to stop the wind, but there are also no trees to obstruct the view.

3 reasons why skiers love the "Plateau"„

1. The best quality snow Due to the high altitude, temperatures here are always lower than those at Banderishka Polyana or in the city. This means that the snow stays dry, fluffy and fast for much longer. Even if it is spring and sleet down below, up on the Plateau it is often a real winter with perfect conditions.

2. Wide carving runs The slopes in this area (mainly slopes #3 and #11) are extremely wide. This gives skiers and snowboarders the freedom to make big, wide turns (carving) without worrying about bumping into anyone. The slope is mostly "blue" (easy) to "red" (medium), making it suitable for people who want to improve their technique.

3. The breathtaking view „The "Platoto" offers the best panorama in the entire resort. Going down, right in front of you rises the marble giant - Vihren Peak (2914 m), and to the side you can see Kutelo and The horse. This is the place for the most beautiful photos on Instagram.

“The ”Traps” of the Plateau: What should you keep in mind?

Despite its beauty, this area also hides its challenges, for which you must be prepared:

  • Wind and fog: Since it is an open space without trees, the "Plateau" is the first place to be "hit" by bad weather. In strong wind or fog, visibility can disappear in minutes. If you see that the weather breaks down, head down to the forest ("Shiligarnika"), where visibility is better.

  • Transportation up: The main way to ride only on the "Plateau" is via "pan" type ski lift„. It is the longest in the resort and for many beginner snowboarders (and skiers) it is a real test.

  • The cold: It's always a few degrees colder and windier here. A good mask and scarf/face mask are a must.

How to get there?

The "Platoto" is most easily reached by the four-seater lift "Banderitsa 2" or the six-seater "Todorka" (if you get off at an intermediate station or continue to the top and descend to the Plateau).

Conclusion

„The “plateau” is the heart of the high mountain in Bansko. It is the place where you feel the true scale of Pirin. If the weather is sunny and calm, there is no better place to ride in Bulgaria. Just climb up, take a deep breath and enjoy the freedom!
