Bulgaria and the Olympic Dream: Historic Bids

Bulgaria has always had the ambition to host the Winter Olympics. We came closest to success for the games in 1992., when Sofia's candidacy was considered the favorite. In the last IOC vote in Lausanne, Sofia lost to the French Albertville by only two votes - a moment that remains bitter in Bulgarian sports history, but proved that our country has the potential for events of this magnitude.

Bids in 1994 and 2014 followed, both of which failed, but focused attention on the need for infrastructure modernization. Today, the debate is focused on Bansko and the possibility of a Youth Olympic Games to serve as a springboard towards the big goal.

Bulgarian medals: The eternal heroes of the snow

Bulgaria has won a total of 6 medals of the Winter Olympics. The brightest moment remains February 9, 1998, when the legendary Ekaterina Dafovska won the gold medal in the biathlon in Nagano. This is our only title to date – a success that inspired generations of Bulgarians to fall in love with the mountains.

We cannot ignore the achievements of Evgenia Radanova – the only Bulgarian athlete with three medals from winter games, as well as Ivan Lebanov, who won the first bronze in 1980.

Bansko: Can Pirin host the Olympics?

Bansko is no longer just a winter resort; it is a global brand. With its 75 km of perfectly maintained slopes and a state-of-the-art lift network, the town is ready for the highest sporting standards. The organization of numerous World Cups in alpine skiing and snowboarding has proven that Bansko's logistical capacity is at a world level.

For the Winter Olympics to become a reality in Bansko, a state strategy is needed to build facilities that are currently missing in the country – such as a bobsleigh and skeleton chute, as well as a large ice hockey arena. Experts suggest a “decentralized games” model, in which Bansko takes over the alpine disciplines and Sofia the ice sports.

Disciplines and sports: What does the Olympic program include?

The current Winter Olympic program is divided into 15 major sports, which cover a variety of skills – from sheer speed to artistry and tactical thinking:

  • Alpine skiing: Downhill, slalom and combined – the heart of the winter games.
  • Biathlon: A combination of endurance and nerves of steel when shooting.
  • Snowboarding: The fastest growing sport with disciplines such as parallel slalom and slopestyle.
  • Ice hockey: The most watched team winter sport in the world.
  • Figure skating: A ballet on ice that always attracts millions to the screens.
  • Curling: An extremely interesting strategic sport that requires precision.

The 2026 games are expected to include: ski mountaineering – a discipline that is very popular in Bulgaria, and more specifically in Pirin and Rila.

Interesting fact

Did you know that Beijing is the only city in the world to host both the Summer (2008) and Winter Olympics (2022)? This sets new standards for sustainability and the use of existing infrastructure.

Conclusion: The Road to Milan-Cortina 2026

The Winter Olympics continue to inspire. As the world prepares for Milano-Cortina 2026, Bulgaria looks ahead with hope for new medals. Bansko, with its readiness to host the best in the world, remains a key factor in the development of Bulgarian sport. Regardless of whether the next Olympics will be on Bulgarian soil, the spirit of the champions is alive in every slope and every Bulgarian child who takes their first steps on the snow today.
