With a dog, a drone or a tent in Pirin? What is allowed in the National Park?

A tourist with a dog on a leash on a trail in Pirin National Park, following the rules.
Pirin is not just a mountain, but National Park and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This means that strict rules apply here, different from those in a city park or at a campsite by the sea. Every summer we see arguments on social media: “Why was I fined for a tent?”, “Why can't I bathe my dog in the lake?”. To save yourself fines (which start at 500 BGN) and conflicts with park guards, here's what you need to know about etiquette and rules in Pirin.

1. Tents and “Wild Camping”

This is the most frequently violated rule. In Pirin National Park“ Bivouac and lighting fires are strictly prohibited. outside the designated areas.

Where CAN you pitch a tent?

Only in the designated areas around the chalets:

  • Banderitsa Hut (there is a separate campsite).
  • Demyanitsa Hut.
  • Shelter Tevno Lake (it is allowed to pitch a tent at dusk if the shelter is full).
  • Bezbog Hut / Kamentsa Hut.

It is prohibited: Pitching tents near the Banderishki Lakes, Muratovo Lake or in the high area around the peaks.

2. Swimming in lakes: Why is it a problem?

The photo of an influencer swimming in “Okoto” or “Muratovo Lake” looks great on Instagram, but it is an environmental crime.

  • The ecosystem: Glacial lakes are closed, cold ecosystems. Sunscreen, sweat, and chemicals from your skin kill the microorganisms in them.
  • Swamping: The introduction of organic matter leads to eutrophication (bogging). If we want the lakes to remain blue and clear, we should not enter them.

3. Pets: With a dog on Vihren?

Can you take your dog to Pirin? Yes, but only on occasion.

Risks for the dog (and owner):

  1. Wild animals: Pirin is home to wild goats. If your dog is let loose and chases a herd of goats (which is instinct), it could fall into a precipice or be fined by the rangers.
  2. The narrow paths: In places like "“The horse”"or the edge of Vihren, a restless dog can push not only you, but also other tourists.
  3. Moraines: Sharp rocks often cut the pads of city dogs' paws. Wear special dog shoes or patches.

4. Drones: Buzzing in the Silence

Officially, a permit is required to fly a drone in a National Park. In practice, unless you are filming commercially, you will rarely get into trouble, BUT:

  • The noise: The drone's hum stresses wild animals (goats, birds of prey) and spoils the pleasure of tourists who have come for silence.
  • Label: If you decide to take pictures, do it quickly, high up, and away from people. Don't fly over the heads of tourists at the top.

5. Summary table: What is allowed?

Activity Status Comment
Lighting a fire FORBIDDEN It is only allowed in designated areas (firepits) in front of the chalets. Gas stoves are allowed everywhere.
Picking flowers FORBIDDEN The edelweiss and the Pirin poppy are protected species. The fines are high.
Herbs and mushrooms ALLOWED In moderate quantities for personal use (not commercial).
Swimming in lakes FORBIDDEN Keep the water clean!

The Golden Rule: Leave No Trace

The most important rule in Pirin is simple: “Take only pictures, leave only footprints.” All trash, including banana peels and wet wipes, must go down with you back to the Bansko. The mountain has no cleaners.
