  • The high altitude and specific climate guarantee the retention of quality "powder" long after snowfall, especially on the northern slopes.
  • Access to the high alpine zone is extremely easy thanks to the lift facilities in Bansko and Dobrinishte (Bezbog hut).
  • The mountain offers a huge variety – from wide and open cirques to narrow, technical chutes (couloirs) with a slope of over 40 degrees.

🏔️ Top 4 Routes for ski-touring and freeride

1. The Classics: Peak Todorka and Little Todorka
This is the most popular off-piste area above Bansko, as the start is easily accessible from the upper lift station. After a short climb (panting or carrying skis) along the edge to Malka Todorka or Todorka peak itself, numerous options for a spectacular descent open up. The most famous lines are along the western slope (towards the Banderitsa valley and Vihren hut) or along the eastern slope (towards the Demyanitsa river valley). Warning: The gullies of Todorka are highly avalanche-dangerous!

2. The Panoramic Tour: Muratov Peak and Ovinati Lakes
A wonderful and relatively safer (if you choose the right line) ski touring route. It starts from the Vihren hut area, passes by the frozen Muratov (Ovinati) lakes and climbs to the saddle between Muratov and Hvoinati peaks. From there, there is a long, open and very pleasant descent back to the Banderitsa river valley.

3. The Epic Descent: Polezhan and Gazeyan Circus
This route takes tourists from Dobrinishte to Bansko. It begins with a climb from the Bezbog hut to the peak of the region - Polezhan peak (2851 m). From there, there is an amazingly long off-piste descent into the wild Gazeya Circus, passing by snow-covered lakes, and ending with a forest ride all the way to the Demyanitsa hut and the town of Bansko.

4. The Ultimate Test: Winter traverse through The horse
This it is not just ski touring, but serious ski mountaineering! The route follows the winter E4 trail markings: Yavorov hut – Suhodolski preval – Bayuvi dupki – Koncheto – Kutelo – Vihren. It requires the use of crampons, an ice axe, securing with a rope and carrying the skis on your back over the rock edges. The descent from Vihren to the hut of the same name is reserved only for the elite in this sport.

⚠️ AVALANCHE SAFETY AND EQUIPMENT

Off-piste skiing in Pirin is a game of Russian roulette if you are not prepared. Never leave the ski area without the following mandatory items:

  • 📡 Avalanche device (Pips): ALWAYS ON “Transmit” mode!
  • 🦯 Avalanche probe and the Shovel: Mandatory tools in the backpack of each member of the group. (The pips finds you, the probe locates you, the shovel gets you out).
  • 🎒 Avalanche backpack (Airbag): A highly recommended investment that could save your life by keeping you afloat in the snow.
  • 🧠 Knowledge: Equipment is useless if you don't know how to use it. Take an avalanche safety course! Follow the daily avalanche bulletin and avoid slopes over 30 degrees after heavy snowfall or strong winds.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Do I need a mountain guide for off-piste skiing?
If you are not familiar with the terrain in Pirin in winter, hiring a licensed ski guide is absolutely necessary. He knows which slopes are wind-loaded and how to avoid avalanche traps.

Can I ski touring on the summer tourist trails?
Not always! Many of the summer trails (for example, through the bottom of the Razlog Valley or under Vihren) pass through natural avalanche chutes and are deadly in winter. The winter routes run mainly along ridges and edges.
