With its height of 2908 meters, Kutelo Peak is only 6 meters behind Vihren. However, this insignificant difference in numbers hides a completely different world of emotions, views and challenges. Kutelo is not just „second“; it is the king of the karst ridge, the guardian of the „Horse“ phenomenon and the home of the most beautiful edelweiss above Bansko.

Geography of the two-headed dragon
Unlike the classic pyramidal structure of Vihren, Kutelo Peak has a more diffuse and complex shape. It is often called "double-headed" because it consists of two main peaks located on the main marble ridge - Kutelo 1 (2908 m) and Kutelo 2 (2907 m). Between them there is a small, barely noticeable saddle, which gives the peak its characteristic profile when viewed from a distance, for example from the Bansko or Razlog area.
The name of the peak comes from the ancient word "kutel" (a vessel for pounding grain or food), probably because of the shape of the circuses around it - the Big and the Small Kazan - which resemble huge stone cups.
The Relationship with "The Horse": Adrenaline on the Razor's Edge
It is impossible to write about Kutelo Peak, not to mention the most iconic cliff edge in Bulgaria – The horse. Kutelo is the southern support of this phenomenon. The saddle connects the peak with the neighboring peak Banski Suhodol (the third highest in the mountain).
For many climbers and tourists, the ascent of Kutelo is inextricably linked with the crossing of Koncheto. The view from the top to the narrow karst edge is chilling and admirable at the same time. On the northern side of Kutelo, the slopes descend almost vertically to the Banski Suhodol circus, where snowdrifts (microglaciers) remain year-round. On the southern side, the slopes are more gentle, but still steep, descending to the valley of the Vlahinskie Lakes.
Main routes for climbing Mount Kutelo
Climbing is no walk in the park. It requires good physical fitness, proper equipment, and respect for the mountain. Here are the two most popular approaches we recommend.
1. The Classic: Vihren Hut – Kazanite – Premkata – Kutelo Peak
This is the most frequently used and accessible route for a one-day hike from Bansko.
- Duration: 3:00 – 3:30 (one way).
- Marking: Red.
- Description: Starting from Vihren Hut, the trail winds up, passing the Jamdzhiev Rocks and entering the „Great Kazan“ circus. This is a magical place, surrounded by the sheer walls of Vihren on the left and Kutelo on the right.
The key moment is the climb to the saddle The Sling – the lowest point between the two giants. The winds here are often hurricane-force. From Premkata the trail splits – to the left is Vihren, and to the right begins the steep, gravelly slope of Kutelo. The elevation gain is overcome quickly, but the slope is serious and requires attention, especially when descending, as the small pebbles make the terrain slippery.
2. The Challenge: Yavorov Hut – Koncheto – Kutelo Peak
This route is for more experienced and hardy mountaineers and is often part of the traverse of the karst ridge.
- Duration: 6:30 – 7:30 a.m.
- Features: Technical terrain with metal ropes.
The hike from Yavorov hut is long, passing through a series of peaks and culminating in the crossing of the Koncheto rock edge, secured with a metal rope. After passing the adrenaline test on the edge, you step directly onto the dome of Kutelo Peak. This approach offers the most dramatic views, but requires a stable psyche and no fear of heights.
⚠️ IMPORTANT: Safety and Equipment
Kutelo Peak does not forgive underestimation. As a typical karst peak, there is no water here. Here is what is mandatory:
- Water: Minimum 2 liters per person.
- Shoes: High mountain shoes with hard soles (because of the sharp rocks).
- Clothing: Windproof jacket (Windstopper), even in summer. The wind at 2900 meters is cold.
- Sun protection: Marble reflects the sun like a mirror – wear sunglasses and a high factor sunscreen.
The kingdom of edelweiss and chamois
Although at first glance Kutelo Peak looks like a lifeless pile of marble, it is home to rare and valuable flora and fauna. It is here, along the sheer walls towards The Kazanites, the symbol of mountaineering grows – the edelweiss (Leontopodium nivaleThe small, mossy flower has found refuge in the crevices of the rocks, where few can reach it.
If you are lucky and move quietly, it is almost certain that you will also encounter the lords of these rocks – Balkan chamois. They move with incredible grace along the sheer walls of Kutelo, as if gravity does not exist for them. They can often be seen resting right on the peak or crossing the snowdrifts at the foot.
The View: Reward for Effort
When you step on the 2908 elevation, fatigue disappears instantly. The panorama from Kutelo Peak is one of the most comprehensive in Bulgaria:
- To the south: Vihren rises so close that you can almost touch it. You can clearly see the people crawling along its slope.
- To the north: The gaze glides along the edge of Koncheto towards Banski Suhodol and further towards the forest belts above Yavorov hut.
- To the east: Razlog and Bansko lie like on a map in the lowlands, and beyond them the Rhodope Mountains appear blue.
- To the west: A view opens up of the Vlahini Lakes, the Sinanishko Ridge and the distant folds of Maleshevska Mountain and Ograzhden.
In exceptionally clear weather, the horizon opens up all the way to the White Sea and the mythical Mount Olympus in Greece.
