Why Bulgarians Abroad Choose a Summer Vacation in Bansko

An illustrative-style infographic showing the specific summer benefits of Bansko for Bulgarians abroad. It includes panels about mountain coolness, authentic architecture, traditional cuisine, a jazz festival, and location near Greece.
Planning the perfect summer vacation in Bansko is becoming much more than a passing trend among our compatriots abroad. Traditionally, returning home during the hot August has always been associated with the Black Sea coast. On the other hand, today more and more emigrants are consciously choosing a different approach to their vacation. They are looking for coolness, tranquility and a real connection with their Bulgarian roots. We met them quite by chance yesterday evening, on August 7, in the very center of Банско. We were in the famous механа „Бай Коце“ – one of those typical, authentic Bulgarian restaurants where the aroma of roasted meat and homemade dishes greets you right from the door, and the weather! It seemed to flow more slowly. They were a large, noisy and cheerful group of 12 people – Bulgarians who have been living, working and raising their children in the UK for years. Among them were friendly families, brothers, sisters and a bunch of children. We decided to ask them what brings them here and why they chose the majestic Pirin Mountains for their vacation.

The truth about the Black Sea coast, the world's beaches and the road to Greece

As a result of our conversation, one thing quickly became clear: the world is big and full of beautiful seas. For people who live in Western Europe and have good incomes, access to luxurious seaside destinations like Spain, Italy or the French Riviera is extremely easy. They shared quite frankly that although they miss their homeland, the Bulgarian Black Sea coast can hardly compete with many of these world beaches, especially when it comes to cleanliness, overcrowding and tranquility.

It is important to know that a large part of Bulgarians abroad do not actually give up the sea at all. They simply choose to go to the beach in neighboring Greece. But here comes the most interesting part of their plan. Instead of traveling directly to the Greek islands or Halkidiki, they decide to first go through Банско. They stay here for a week to enjoy the mountains, and only then continue south to the Greek coast. This combination of mountain freshness and sea breeze turns out to be the absolute recipe for the perfect vacation.

Advice for travelers: Bansko's geographical location makes it an ideal stop before the Greek border. The road to the beaches of Northern Greece takes just over two hours, allowing for a seamless combination of the two types of tourism.

The Unique Face of Bulgaria: Nostalgia for Cobblestones and Traditions

But why Bansko? According to our interlocutors from the UK, when they return to Bulgaria, they are not just looking for a place to sleep or another shiny hotel. When you live abroad for years, a specific nostalgia builds up inside you. You want to come home and really feel “like in Bulgaria”.

What makes our homeland truly unique and unsurpassed is not necessarily its beaches, but its magnetic mountain towns. In one summer vacation in Bansko emigrants discover everything they miss abroad:

  • Authentic architecture: The narrow cobblestone streets and the typical old houses with massive wooden gates and stone walls that carry the spirit of the Bulgarian Renaissance.
  • Real food: The opportunity to sit in a traditional setting, such as механа „Бай Коце“, and try authentic Bulgarian dishes. From kapama and chomlek to real pink tomatoes and fresh cheese, the taste of which cannot be found in British supermarkets.
  • The coolness of Pirin: By “good weather” they no longer understand 40-degree heat and exhausting sweating. For them, good weather is the clean mountain air, the freshness of the forest, and the opportunity to breathe deeply.

The magic of Банско Джаз Фест

In addition to nature and cuisine, cultural life is a huge magnet for tourists. The holding of the emblematic Банско Джаз Фест turns the city into a true cultural capital of the summer. Our interlocutors shared that they love these cool summer evenings.

They can simply stay in the tavern in the center or settle down very close to the festival stage. There, under the open sky and with a drink in hand, they enjoy quality music and precious time with their loved ones. Three stories about love for the city

The story of this great company is made up of different destinies, but they are all united by their love for the mountains. Here is what some of them shared with us on August 7th:

The tradition of Кремена: She told us that she has been coming to the city for seven years in a row. For her, Bansko has long been one of her favorite places in her homeland. This is not just a vacation, but a mandatory annual ritual for recharging.

The discovery of Петя: Her encounter with the city is not her first, but the contrast from the past is huge. “I came here 25 years ago. Now, in recent years, the city is completely unrecognizable,” she shares with admiration. She likes the city so much that she has "infected" her British friends. They have been so charmed by the atmosphere that they now traditionally come every Christmas to celebrate here.

The family idyll of Йоана: She was here with her children and the children of relatives. Joanna says that she spends her time here with great pleasure and looks forward to returning every summer. For her, the greatest happiness is to walk around the wonderful Pirin Mountains during the day and enjoy the beautiful jazz music in the evening.

Attention: If you are planning a visit during the Jazz Festival in August, book your hotels and taverns at least a few months in advance. The city is extremely crowded during this period!

How is the day going for British Bulgarians here?

Starting their day early, the group never gets bored. Here's their recipe for a perfectly balanced vacation:

  1. Nature tour: Mornings are reserved for walks through the ancient forests of the national park.
  2. Climbing peaks: The more active of the group test their endurance on the high mountain routes.
  3. SPA and recovery: After the tiring hike, they also make sure to go to the spa in the local mineral water pools.
  4. Evening relaxation: The day ends at the Jazz Fest stage or in a cozy tavern with a fireplace and a rich meal.

If you live outside the country and are planning a return trip, follow their example. Rediscover the magic of the old cobblestone streets and treat yourself to a week of true peace before heading to the beaches.
