Technical specifications of the Bansko cable car
The system, designed and built by the world leader in the industry – the Austrian-Swiss company Doppelmayr, is a benchmark for reliability. To understand the scale of the facility, we need to look at the numbers behind its daily operation.
| Parameter | Value / Description |
|---|---|
| Manufacturer | Doppelmayr (Austria) |
| Facility type | 8-MGD (8-seater detachable gondola) |
| Engine power | Over 1000 kW (1 MW) |
| Maximum speed | 6.0 m/s (21.6 km/h) |
| Route length | 6233 meters |
The Prime Mover: The Power Behind the Climb
The main electric motor generates an impressive power of over 1000 kilowatts (kW). This colossal power is needed to turn the huge drive wheel (also called a “bullwheel”), which transmits the movement to the steel cable several centimeters thick. The engines are located in specially insulated machine rooms that minimize noise and vibration for passengers.
Despite their power, modern motors are designed to be energy efficient. Intelligent computer systems vary the power delivery according to the load. In summer mode or with fewer passengers, electricity consumption is drastically reduced, making the Bansko gondola one of the most environmentally friendly modes of transport in Pirin.
The “Grip” mechanism: The ingenious solution for smooth braking
One of the most common questions is: How does the rope move constantly at high speed, while the gondolas slow down the stations? The answer lies in technology “Grip” (detachable gripping mechanism).
When the cabin approaches the station, a special guide rail presses the grip levers on the roof. This pressure opens the jaws, releasing the steel cable. Immediately after, the gondola passes over a system of dozens of rotating rubber wheels (tirfors), which gradually reduce its speed to below 0.5 m/s. This allows skiers to enter and exit with absolute peace of mind.
Why is safety guaranteed?
The grip system is strictly checked with every turn! Electronic sensors at the exit of each station measure the “biting” force of each grip. If the sensor detects even a minimal deviation, the lift stops automatically within seconds.
Emergency Protection: Plan “B”
Passenger safety is an absolute priority. Many people worry about what would happen if there was a power outage. The cable car has multi-level independent protection:
- Diesel generators: In the event of a power outage, powerful units automatically turn on within 2-3 minutes.
- Spare hydraulic motor: It is physically independent of the main engine and can take all passengers to the nearest station even in the event of a serious failure of the main system.
- Anemometers (Wind Sensors): Sensors are installed along the route to monitor wind speed. In case of dangerous gusts, the computer automatically reduces speed or stops the facility.
Maintenance and daily inspections
Every day, before the first tourist boards the Bansko gondola, a team of highly qualified mechanics performs a full inspection. This includes a visual inspection of the rope, testing of the braking systems, and checking the communication lines between the stations.
Twice a year – before the winter and summer seasons – the facility undergoes extensive technical maintenance. During these periods, rope defectoscopy (X-ray inspection for internal defects) and servicing of all moving parts are performed.
The connection with nature: The ecological aspect
Using a cable car is the cleanest way to access the higher parts of Pirin National Park. Thanks to Doppelmayr technology, the congestion of hundreds of cars on the road to the Banderishka meadow, which drastically reduces carbon emissions in the area. Intelligent energy management ensures that the lift consumes exactly as much power as is needed at the specific moment.
