History of the Kukeri

The Kukeri custom is one of Bulgaria's oldest and most vibrant rituals — a pre-Christian tradition deeply rooted in Thracian and Slavic heritage. The masked figures, adorned with heavy iron bells, fearsome masks, and striking traditional costumes, hold a sacred role: to banish evil spirits and bring fertility and prosperity for the new year.

“The sound of the Kukeri bells is not just noise – it is an ancient prayer sent to the earth and the heavens.”

— Local Bansko Тradition

In Bansko, this tradition has been passed down through generations. On 1 January — the New Year — the masked Kukeri take to Nikola Vaptsarov Square and take over the streets with the din of bells, dancing, and games. Each mask is handmade, each costume tells a story.

The procession is open to everyone — locals and visitors, young and old alike. It is a living bridge between past and present, earth and sky, fear and hope.

🔔

The Masks
Handcrafted from wood, fur, and horns. Each mask is entirely unique—fearsome, grotesque, and powerful.
🌾
The Ritual
A symbolic banishing of evil, plowing of the earth, and blessing of the fields for a fertile year ahead.
👘
The Costumes
Vibrant and colorful, adorned with intricate embroidery and furs. Every village has its distinct Kukeri attire, passed down from father to son.
