Pirin: a complete safety guide

Pirin is a mountain with a harsh, alpine character. The sharp rock edges, scree, snowfields and abrupt changes in the weather! They do not forgive mistakes. Read this page carefully—it could save a life.

🎒 Before you go: preparation is 80% from safety

Most incidents can be „solved“ at home with proper planning. Go through these steps before every outing.

🗺️

Plan the route

Check the elevation gain (ascent in meters), not just the kilometers. Assess whether the route is within your capabilities.

🌦️

Check the forecast

Watch the altitude forecast, not the city. Wind and visibility are critical.

👥

Tell someone

Leave an exact route and return time with a loved one.

📲

Offline maps + GPS

Download an offline map (e.g. BG Mountains) and install the app on MSS.

🔋

Charged batteries

Full battery and powerbank. In the cold, the phone drops quickly.

🛡️

Mountain insurance

Hundreds a day, but it covers a rescue operation and a helicopter. Don't leave without it.

🛑 Red flags: critical errors

A hiker's biggest enemy is not the mountain, but their own ego. Here are the decisions that most often lead to accidents.

🧍

Alone on the high mountain

In the event of a minor injury or panic, a person is helpless and freezes quickly.

Couple rule Minimum two people above the forest belt.
🐕

With a dog on a cliff edge

Panic of the animal and sudden tightening of the leash on technical terrain.

Free hands rule On the "Horse" the hands are for the railing. Leave the dog at home.
🕐

Late departure

Starting after 9:00 a.m. means being at the top during the dangerous afternoon hour for storms.

Leave at dawn. The climbs end by noon.
👟

Inappropriate equipment

Sneakers on scree, cotton in the cold — a recipe for frostbite.

Layers and sturdy shoes See the checklist below.
↩️

Stubbornness to the top

Ignoring fatigue or time just to "get to the top.".

The peak is an option, the return is an obligation Turn around on time.
💧

A little water

In Pirin, water is scarce on the ridge. Dehydration leads to bad decisions.

Minimum 2 liters Bring 2+ liters per person and drink regularly.

✅ The ultimate checklist: equipment for the alpine belt

Mark each line before leaving (for your convenience only, they are not saved).

⚡ Weather: the invisible trap

The Golden Rule at 12:00 PM.

Summer thunderstorms in Pirin most often strike between 1:00 PM and 4:00 PM. All heavy summit climbs and exposed ridge crossings should be completed by noon. If you see dark clouds at 11:30 a.m., descend immediately.

🛡️ Sheepdogs: meeting on the trail

On the approaches to Pirin, there are large herds guarded by Karakachan women. To them, you are a threat to the herd.

When encountering sheepdogs:

  • Don't run. This activates their hunting instinct. The one who runs is prey.
  • Surround the herd. Don't go straight through it, even if the path is there. Make a big arc.
  • If dogs approach you, stop. Speak softly, confidently, and without aggression. Don't look them directly in the eye.
  • If you have poles, keep them low to your body. Don't pick them up by swinging them — this provokes them to attack.
  • Place the backpack or poles between you and the dogs, if they become too insistent.
  • Wait for the shepherd. If he is nearby, he will call them. Slowly back down without turning your back on them immediately.

🪨

Scree and stones

Step steadily and do not move under each other so as not to move a stone.

⛓️

Exposed edges

Hold on to the "Koncheto" with both hands, move slowly, and don't crowd together.

🌫️

Fog

Coming in minutes. Stay on the markings or wait; use GPS.

🥶

Hypothermia

It is also possible in the summer - in wind, rain, and wet clothes.

❄️
