Why is this route legendary?

  • 🐐 The kingdom of wild goats: You will pass through the “Bayuvi Dupki – Dzhindzhiritsa” reserve, where the probability of seeing herds of wild goats is over 80%.
  • 🏔️ The phenomenon "“The Kazanites“": The deep cirques under Vihren Peak hold snow year-round, creating an alpine landscape atypical for our latitudes.
  • 🧗 The wall: From the “Premkata” saddle, the most impressive view of the 300-meter North Face of Vihren Peak – the cradle of Bulgarian mountaineering – is revealed.

Logistics and preparation: How do you get there?

Starting point: Vihren Hut (1950 m)

Ако стартирате от Bansko, имате няколко опции за достигане до хижата. Имайте предвид, че това е linear route, which means you will end up in a completely different place (above Razlog/Simitli).

  • By car: During the active summer season (July 1 – September 15) the road from The Shiligarnika upwards is closed to private vehicles between 08:00 and 16:00.
  • City transport: We recommend using the municipal bus from Bansko to Vihren hut (departs from the bus station) so you don't have to worry about the logistics of the return trip.

💡 Logistics advice: Since you will get off at Yavorov hut, it is best to leave your car in Bansko. From Yavorov hut, the descent is to the “Betolovoto” area (above Razlog), from where you will have to take a taxi or arrange transportation back to Bansko (about 15-20 km).

Detailed description of the stages

The route from Vihren hut to Yavorov hut follows the red tape marking and is part of the international road E4. The terrain is varied - from steep rocky paths to flat panoramic clearings.

Stage 1: Vihren Hut – Kazana Shelter (2:00 – 2:30)

The trail starts steeply uphill past the fountain in front of the hut. After about 30 minutes you reach the fork for “Kabata” (left), but you continue right and up to Kazanite. A difficult climb through rocky passages follows. Be careful at “Dzhamdzhievi Rocks” – the view of the valley is stunning, but the abyss is close.

Stage 2: Kazana – Premkata – Suhodolski Pass (2:30 – 3:00)

You enter the Small and Big Kazan. Here is the “Kazana” shelter – a small metal building that serves only for emergencies. From here begins a short but very steep climb to the saddle. The Sling (2660 m).

Important: The wind is almost always strong on Premkata. From here the trail cuts through the foot of Mount Kutelo. This is a technical section with a lot of rocks (scram) that requires sturdy shoes. The trail takes you to Suhodolski Pass – the border between the marble and granite parts of Pirin.

Stage 3: Descent to Yavorov Hut (2:30 – 3:00 p.m.)

From the pass, the long descent begins. Initially, you walk through open areas with squats, passing by the “Sukhodolsko Lake” (often dry in the summer). Gradually, you enter a beautiful coniferous forest. The path becomes softer, but the roots can be slippery. Just before the hut, you will pass through vast meadows.

Final destination: Yavorov Hut – comfort in the heart of the forest

Yavorov Hut (1740 m) consists of two buildings – old and new, both of which are among the best maintained in Bulgaria. It is a favorite of photographers because of the terrace overlooking the rock phenomenon “The Steps”.

⚠️ Important: Safety and preparation

1. The water problem

The marble part of Pirin is waterless. The only reliable sources are at Vihren hut and Yavorov hut. In 2026, due to the dry summers, even the small streams along the road may have dried up. Bring at least 2-3 liters of water per person!

2. Sun and Shadow

From Vihren hut to entering the forest above Yavorov (about 5-6 hours of hiking) there is almost no shade. The white marble reflects the sunlight, which doubles the risk of burns and heatstroke. Sunglasses and a hat are mandatory.

3. Mobile coverage

The coverage is good in high and open places (Premkata, Suhodolski Preval). In deep cirques like “Kazanite” and in gullies, the signal is often lost.

🚑 Emergency?

In case of an accident, immediately call 112 or the Bulgarian Emergency Service (1470). Mountain insurance is absolutely mandatory for this terrain!

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Is the route suitable for children?
Not recommended for children under 10-12 years old unless they have serious mountain experience. The terrain is difficult and the elevation gain is significant.

Can I go through "“The horse“"?
The classic red marking undercuts the peaks of Kutelo and the Koncheto ridge, passing lower. If you want to go along the Koncheto ridge itself, you have to deviate from Premkata upwards. This adds time and requires no fear of heights.

What equipment do I need?
High boots (because of the rocks), poles (because of the strain on the knees when descending), a windbreaker and a headlamp (in case you get caught in the dark).

Are you ready for the adventure?

The hike from Vihren Hut to Yavorov Hut is a test of the spirit that you will remember for a lifetime. Pirin awaits you!
