- The fortress The Kalya (1384 m above sea level) is a late antique fortification. It was built on a huge natural hill, protected by the deep and picturesque gorge of the Byala River.
- It is believed that this place was a key observation and defense post of the Razlog Valley, guarding an old Roman road that led to the White Sea.
- Even today, along the edge of the hill, remains of walls built of local limestone and marble, bonded with mortar and broken brick, reaching up to 3.5 meters in height in places, can be seen.
🚗 How to get there? (Logistics)
The starting point is the junction for the Yavorov hut„. To get there, you need to travel to the town of Razlog and head towards the Betolovoto area. The asphalt road passes by several holiday complexes, then reaches a large extension and signs indicating the entrance to Pirin National Park and the beginning of the road to Yavorov Hut. Right here, at the very beginning of the forest, is the most convenient place to park your car and continue on foot.

1. The Beginning: From the fork in the forest
The route starts from the Betolovoto area, where you leave the main macadam road to the Yavorov hut. The path enters a beautiful, shady mixed forest (mostly pine and beech trees). The slope is quite gentle and conducive to leisurely walking and conversations.
2. The Forest Path
Following the blue markings and the shaped clearing, you will feel the true aroma of Pirin. In this part of the mountain, it is extremely soft and hospitable. The path winds smoothly, and in the spring months it is dotted with numerous forest flowers.
3. Exiting the ridge at Kaliata
After about an hour of pleasant walking, the trees thin out and the path takes you to a rocky and pronounced hill. From here, a magnificent panorama opens up to the Razlog Valley and the neighboring hills. It is on this naturally protected peak, overhanging the Byala Reka ravine, that the ruins of the ancient fortress are located.

🏰 Basic information about the site (Kalyata Fortress)
This is an open-air archaeological site. The ruins have not been fully restored, which gives them a very authentic and wild look.
- 📌 Tip: The place is perfect for a picnic, but be careful – the hill slopes steeply towards the river, so keep an eye on the children.
- 🕒 Working hours: Accessible at any time, no entrance fees.
- ☀️ Season: Optimal period: spring, summer and autumn. In winter the trail is not maintained.
- 💧 Water: There are no water fountains at the fortress itself or along the trail. Bring your own water (1 liter is more than enough).

Although the route is very easy, it passes through forest areas where there is a possibility of ticks (especially in spring and early summer). Use repellent and wear long pants. The remains of the fortress are of historical value – Moving stones is prohibited. and conducting any amateur "excavations".
