What exactly is a high mountain shelter in Pirin?
Unlike the classic tourist huts in Pirin, the real shelter in Pirin is not a place for a comfortable rest with hot soup, service staff and advance reservations. First of all, it is a small, spartan structure, built in key, often extreme and difficult to access places. Accordingly, its main and most important goal is survival in the harsh conditions of the mountain.
Modest equipment, but of enormous importance
It is important to know that real shelters do not have running water, no sanitary facilities, and are definitely not electrified, unless they have a small solar panel for basic lighting. Inside, you will find only the absolute essentials for an emergency. The equipment usually consists of wooden bunks (cots), a sturdy table, a few blankets, and possibly dry food left by previous tourists.
Attention: Every visitor to a high mountain shelter must rely primarily on their own specialized equipment and supplies. Never plan to spend the night there if you are not prepared for extreme temperatures!
The Golden Rules: How to use a shelter in Pirin?
Since there is no permanent hut keeper in these shelters, their maintenance lies entirely on the conscience and solidarity of the mountaineers themselves. In order for each shelter in Pirin to fulfill its life-saving function, it is critically important to follow several unwritten, but absolutely mandatory rules:
- Use them for their intended purpose: Shelters are strictly for short-term stays in bad weather, emergencies, or planned strenuous hikes on the Alpine ridge. They are definitely not a place for free weekend getaways.
- Close the door tightly: This is the number one rule of the high altitude! A poorly closed or forgotten door means that in the winter the room will be filled with snow and ice. As a result, it becomes unusable and can cost the lives of people in distress after you.
- Leave it cleaner than before: All waste, without exception, is put into the backpack and taken down to civilization. Nothing is left “just in case.”.
- Share your provisions: It is always good manners, if you have a surplus, to leave dry food (e.g. biscuits), tea bags, dry alcohol or a lighter.
Where are the key shelters in Pirin?
The rugged alpine nature of the mountain makes having safe shelters along the main routes absolutely invaluable. Here are the most famous shelters in the region:
- Заслон Кончето (2760 m above sea level): An emblematic building, attached to the rocks on the very edge of the marble with strong metal ropes, it shelters tourists passing through the most extreme part of the mountain.
- Заслон Тевно езеро & Спано поле: Although historically called a “shelter,” today they function more like traditional huts. They have staff, hot food, and beds during the active summer season.
- Заслон Казана (2445 m above sea level): Strategically located on the rocky threshold between the circuses of Golyam and Malak Kazan, it is located just below the majestic northern wall of Vihren Peak.
The new Kazana shelter: Innovation under Vihren Peak
The old man заслон Казана was built in 1957 by the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences for the purpose of studying the microglacier under Vihren Peak. However, after decades of faithful service, depreciation necessitated urgent measures. Thanks to the initiative of the Ski Rescue Service Association and broad volunteer support from rescuers, climbers and architects, today we have a completely new, modern project, the details of which you can also view in the official website of the Kazana shelter.
Architectural and technological details of the new project
The new design strictly adheres to the parameters of Pirin National Park“, building on existing foundations without expanding the built-up area. However, the technological leap is enormous:
- Robust construction and insulation: The base is made of 5 solid steel frames. The outer skin combines galvanized steel sheet with durable Siberian larch, and between them there is 10 cm of two-component polyurethane foam for maximum thermal insulation.
- Light and panorama: A large panoramic window with a view of the northern face of Vihren Peak, a triangular roof window and a small opening window for fresh air have been designed. All of them are triple-glazed for zero heat loss.
- Functional interior: The interior is lined with waterproof plywood. There are 7 bunks (accessible via a ladder), as well as a work table, which in case of an emergency becomes an extra bed.
- Safety and security: The shelter has a wooden door that opens inwards (so it doesn't get blocked by snow), equipped with an automatic closing mechanism. It also has lightning protection, a panic button, a first aid kit and two solar panels on the roof for charging phones.
