🐑 The secret of the name: What is "Shiligarnik"?

It may sound strange, but one of the most modern ski resorts in the Balkans has a name that takes us back centuries to the way of life of the old Banska Bystrica people. The name „"Shiligarnika"“ It is no coincidence and has a very literal meaning.

Here is its etymology:

  • The root "Shile": The word comes from "shile" (plural shileta). In animal husbandry, this is the name given to a lamb that has already been weaned from its mother (not suckling), but has not yet become an adult ewe or ram (usually between 6 months and 1 year old).
  • The meaning of the suffix: The ending shapes the word as a place of residence (similar to „aviary“ or „cowshed“).

That is, "Shiligarnik" literally means „"the spikelet cage"“ or „"a place for the young sheep to spend the night"“.

The historical connection

Before the arrival of lifts, hotels and tourists, Bansko was a town of traders, artisans and livestock breeders. The Pirin Mountains were the main pasture for the huge herds in the summer. The area we know today as a ski resort was ideal for this purpose – sheltered, with lush meadows and water sources. There, shepherds built temporary pens where they would take their sheep to spend the night, protected from predators.

Today, where the herds once slept, snowplows now "sleep" there, but the name remains as a living reminder of the mountain's pastoral past.
