For the holiday

Todorovden is one of the most celebrated spring holidays in Bulgaria, celebrated six weeks before Easter. Also known as Horse Easter, it is dedicated to horses - animals deeply intertwined in the history and soul of the Bulgarian people. In Bansko, the tradition is kept alive with a solemn procession, water blessing, ritual feeding of the horses and folk revelry.

Todorovden falls on the first Saturday after Lent, six weeks before Easter. The date changes every year, within February or March.
Can everyone join the procession?
Yes! All residents and guests of Bansko are welcome to join the procession and the folk fun in the square. Admission is free.

In Bansko, the tradition is for a solemn procession, not a procession — so that both the owners and the horses themselves can fully feel the spirit of Horse Easter.
