⚠️ IMPORTANT SAFETY WARNING:
The article below describes a route with high technical difficulty and real risk to life. The Strazhite traverse is NOT a tourist trail. It is ONLY suitable for very experienced mountaineers with rock climbing skills, excellent physical fitness, no fear of heights and appropriate equipment. Do not undertake this hike alone or in bad weather conditions!
There are places in Pirin that separate tourists from climbers. If “The horse”"" is the spectacular classic, accessible to many thanks to the metal rope, it The Strazhite Traverse is its wild, untamed and much more dangerous big brother. This is where the trail ends and the real adventure on the razor's edge begins.
In this detailed guide, we'll cover everything you need to know about crossing this mythical rocky ridge – from preparation to the sweet taste of success.
What is “The Watchmen” and where is it located?
Strazheti (often called “The Watchmen”) is not a single peak, but a jagged, strongly defined rocky ridge in the Polezhanski part of Pirin. It represents the natural, dramatic connection between two other iconic peaks – the massive Polezhan (2851 m) and the elegant, pyramidal Gazei (2761 m).
Viewed from the Popovo Lake area or from Tevno Lake, The guards resemble a row of stone gendarmes (towers), arranged in an Indian thread, “guarding” the deep cirques below them. That is where their name comes from. Passing along their edge is called “The Watchmen's Traverse” and is considered one of the most prestigious and difficult summer routes in the Bulgarian mountains.
Traverse characteristics:
- Route type: Alpine rock traverse / Scrambling (UIAA Category I and II climbing).
- Marking: NONE. It relies on a sense of the rock and traces of previous passes.
- Elevation: It involves constant climbing and descending the rock towers between 2761 m and 2851 m.
- Duration: 2 to 4 hours for the traverse alone (excluding the approaches).
- Exposure: Extremely high. "Airy" terrain with precipices on both sides.
Required preparation and equipment
Before you even think about The Strazhite Traverse, you need to answer a few questions honestly. Do I have experience moving on unstable moraines? Do I feel comfortable when there are hundreds of meters of abyss under my feet? Can I climb rock passages without a belay device?
🎒 Mandatory minimum equipment:
- Helmet: Absolutely a must! The rock along Strazhite is typical Pirin granite – crumbly in places. Falling rocks are a real risk.
- Stable shoes: With a firm sole and excellent traction, approach shoes are the perfect choice.
- Gloves: Thin, sturdy gloves will protect your hands from the sharp granite crystals.
🧗 Recommended (alpine) equipment:
We highly recommend wearing:
- Alpine seat and 30-40 meter rope for connection.
- Carabiners, straps and friends for securing in key passages.
Route description (Direction Polezhan -> Gazey)
The classic and more logical transition of The Strazhite Traverse is from the higher peak Polezhan to the lower Gazei. Logistically, the most convenient starting point is Bezbog hut.
Stage 1: The beginning and the first gendarme
Once you reach Polezhan Peak, look northwest. You will see how the ridge narrows and begins to descend steeply. The first part is a steep descent on loose terrain from the side of the Gazeian Circus to go around the first large rock tower (Golyam Strazh).
Stage 2: The Real Edge
After going around the first gendarme, the route takes you back to the ridge itself. This is where the real fun begins. You move along the very edge of the razor. Walking often turns into crawling on all fours or “riding” the edge. There is no room for error here.
Stage 3: The finale to Gazei
After overcoming a series of smaller gendarmes, the ridge begins to gradually widen. The final part is a climb to Gazei Peak itself.
Location and Map
Since Strazhite is a rocky ridge, not a single point, the best reference point is the line between Polezhan and Gazey peaks in Northern Pirin. The map below will direct you to the correct area.
When is the best time?
The Strazhite Traverse is a summer route. The most suitable period is from mid-July to the end of September, when the snowdrifts have completely melted and the rock is dry.
Never go to: Forecast for rain, thunderstorms (the edge is very dangerous!), strong winds or the presence of snow/ice.
Conclusion
The passage of The Strazhite Traverse It's not just another stamp in the site booklet. It's a test of your psyche, physique, and respect for the mountain. If you're prepared, the Watchmen will give you one of the most intense experiences in Pirin.
