Do you live in Bansko or are you here on a long ski vacation and feel like you need a day of rest for your muscles? Do you feel like doing something different, authentic and deeply relaxing? Traveling from Bansko to Velingrad by narrow gauge railway, combined with a visit to hot mineral pools, is the best-kept secret for the perfect day trip in the region. This route gives you the opportunity to combine three completely different experiences in just one day: the mountain charm of Bansko, the slow and romantic magic of the only operating narrow-gauge railway in Bulgaria and the healing power of the thermal springs in the SPA capital of the Balkans – Velingrad. In this essential guide, we will take you step by step through the logistics, timetable, prices and the most important practical tips for your trip.

Why is this route mandatory?

You simply sit by the window, open a thermos of hot tea and enjoy the snowy (or green) landscapes as you pass through spiral tunnels (screws) and the highest train station in the Balkans – Avramovo. And the big prize awaits you at the end – a dip in 38-degree mineral water, while outside temperatures are around zero.
