Why exactly? summer?
Summer turns the harsh, inaccessible Alpine Pirin into a vast playground for explorers. The snow on the highest ridges has melted, opening the way to The horse, The guards and all the peaks above 2500 meters. The days are long and the nights in the huts are full of stories.
This is the most popular season. While in Bansko температурите достигат 30°C, горе на 2000 м ви очакват приятни 18-20°C. Хижите са отворени и работят с пълен капацитет, лифтът към Безбог функционира всеки ден, а пътищата до хижа Вихрен и Гоце Делчев са напълно проходими.
Summer, however, requires iron discipline. It's the season of thermal storms, strong UV radiation, and crowded hiking trails. Planning ahead is not a recommendation, but an obligation.
Biggest Danger: Afternoon Storms
Many tourists underestimate the summer weather. A sunny and cloudless morning in Pirin often turns into a powerful, sudden thunderstorm after 1:00 PM - 2:00 PM. Thermal currents lift moisture upwards, forming cumulus clouds in minutes.
Pirin is a mountain with many open ridge routes and metal ropes (like on Koncheto). Getting caught in a thunderstorm on an open ridge is extremely dangerous. The golden rule: Start at 06:00, return to the hut by 14:00.

Open alpine edges
This is the only time of year when crossing narrow rock edges like Koncheto is accessible to ordinary tourists without alpine equipment (crawlers and ice axes).

Юли и август са месеците с най-много хора в планината. Леглата в ключови хижи (Вихрен, Демяница, Тевно езеро) се резервират със седмици или месеци напред.

In Pirin, the forests end at about 2000 m. Above this altitude you are exposed to direct sun all day long. The UV radiation is many times stronger than that at the beach.

By the end of August, many of the small streams in the higher parts dry up. The routes along the karst ridge (the marble section) have no water at all. Bring at least 2 liters.

August is the month of shooting stars (the Perseid meteor shower). Camping by a lake (where permitted) offers the clearest skies in Bulgaria.

Now is the time for the high peaks. The routes are snow-free, but require good physical fitness.
H. Vihren → Vr. Vihren (2914 m) → H. Vihren
The classic. Ascent via Black Mound (the southern trail) and descent via The Kazanites (north trail). Leave no later than 7:00 am.
H. Vihren → The Horse → H. Yavorov
The most famous alpine edge in Bulgaria. The metal ropes are accessible. The route is very long and without a drop of water on the way. Only for people without fear of heights.
H. Bezbog → Popovo Lake
The most popular family summer route. The lift takes you to 2240 m, and from there the path to the largest Pirin lake is pleasant and very picturesque.
H. Demyanitsa → Tevno Lake
A classic approach to the heart of Pirin through Mozgovishka Gate. Reveals incredible views of Kamenitsa. Suitable for a two-day hike with an overnight stay at the shelter.
H. Vihren → Muratovo Lake
A short, steep, but extremely beautiful hike. The lake reflects Mount Todorka like a mirror. Perfect for a half-day walk or picnic.
Meetings on the paths
The animals are most active in the summer. In the higher parts (around the rocks and scree) the chances of a close encounter are high.
Balkan wild goat
They are often seen around Kazanite and Koncheto
🦅Golden eagle
It circles in the thermal currents above the peaks
🐿️Squirrels
Very active in the pine forest belt
🐴Free horses
They graze all summer around Spano Pole
🐮Alpine cows
You can even meet them above 2000 meters.

Overnight stay under the stars
Пирин разполага с мрежа от отлични високопланински хижи (Вихрен, Бъндерица, Демяница, Безбог, Синаница, Пирин) и заслони (Тевно езеро, Спано поле).
However, in July and August they are operating at full capacity. Unlike in spring, you can't count on just showing up and having a place for you. Reservation by phone at least 2 weeks in advance is absolutely mandatory.
💡 Tip: Tents in Pirin National Park can ONLY be pitched in officially designated places (bivouacs) next to the huts.
Required for summer
Sunscreen 50+
The UV index is brutal. 2nd degree burns are common among tourists without sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses.
At least 2 liters of water
In August the streams dry up. If you go along the Marble Ridge (towards Vihren and Koncheto), there is NO water anywhere. Bring everything you need.
Windbreaker jacket in the backpack
Even if it's 35°C down below, up at 2900 m the wind can lower the feeling to 10°C. Never go out in just a T-shirt.
Battery saved
Keep your phone on airplane mode (the signal is lost and the battery is wasted) so that you have a charge in case of an incident to call 112.
Follow the forecast
Use apps like Meteoblue or the MES website. If there is a storm in the afternoon, do not undertake long mountain hikes.
Bring cash.
The huts in Pirin do not have POS terminals due to the lack of stable internet. All payments for food and accommodation are made in cash.
