🚗 How to get there? (Logistics)
Since this is an extremely long journey from point A to point B, the logistics are complicated.
The start is from village of Breznitsa (Gotse Delchev municipality), which is reached by a good asphalt road. If you leave your car there, you should keep in mind that the final destination of the route (Tevno Lake) is deep in the mountains and there is no road to it. This trek is done almost exclusively as part of a multi-day trek across Pirin. To get back to civilization after Tevno Lake, you will have to go down to Bezbog Hut (Dobrinishte), Vihren Hut (Bansko) or Begovitsa hut (Sandanski) the next day.
🥾 Description of the route
1. From the village of Breznitsa through the centuries-old forests
The route starts on a dirt road and trails above the village, marked in brown. The first few hours are a monotonous but steep climb through mixed and coniferous forests. The terrain gains altitude uncompromisingly until you reach the upper border of the forest and the juniper belt.
2. The Storming of Brezniki Chal
Coming out into the open, the rugged slopes of Breznishki Chal confront you. The trail winds along deep cirques (the Breznishki Lakes are visible below). The climb to the very ridge (2707 m) is exhausting and requires excellent stamina, but the view from the top of the entire mountain is worth every drop of sweat.
3. Descent to Popovo Lake
From the ridge, the brown marking begins a long descent to the largest Pirin lake – Popovoto (2234 m above sea level). Here you will have the opportunity to rest by its crystal waters and the small island in the middle.
4. Through the gate to Tevno Lake
From Popovo Lake the route merges with the main tourist arteries. You should take the steep path (usually blue markings) to the Left Kraledvorska Gate (2625 m). After passing the gate, a short descent awaits you to the Tevno Lake shelter itself, magically located on the shore of the lake under the shadow of Kamenitsa peak.

⚠️ Important to know
Water: During the endless climb from Breznitsa to the ridge, water is scarce. You should carry at least 3-4 liters per person for the first part of the day. You can only fill up on water at the lakes.
Weather: Due to the fact that the hike takes over 10 hours, the chance of getting caught in an afternoon summer storm on the high, open ridge of Breznitsa Chal is huge. Departure from Breznitsa should be done at dawn (around 04:00 – 05:00 in the morning). The route is extremely dangerous in bad weather!
