The gateway to the ski capital of the Balkans

Sofia Airport (SOF) is the largest and busiest international airport in Bulgaria. It is the main entry point for thousands of tourists, digital nomads and expats heading to Bansko. Whether you're arriving for the active ski season to enjoy summer mountain hikes, or planning a long-term move, knowing the airport and transportation options will save you time and stress.

This comprehensive guide (Pillar article) will take you through everything you need to know about Sofia Airport – from the location of the terminals and the services offered, to the fastest and safest ways to get to the foothills of the Pirin Mountains.

Architecture, Terminals and Future Changes

Sofia Airport has a long history, with its first passenger building opening in 1947. It currently consists of two active passenger terminals, which are located about 2 kilometers apart.

Useful information: A free electric shuttle bus operates between Terminal 1 and Terminal 2. It runs 24 hours a day, every 30 minutes during the day and every 40 minutes at night. The stops are clearly marked in front of the departure halls.

Terminal 1 (Old Terminal)

Built in the middle of the last century, Terminal 1 is distinguished by its classic architecture. Today it mainly serves low-cost airlines such as Wizz Air and easyJet, as well as numerous charter flights during the winter season, when groups of skiers arrive in Bansko. The amenities here are more basic, but perfectly adequate for a short stay.

Terminal 2 (New Terminal)

Opened in 2006, Terminal 2 is the larger, more modern and busier terminal. It handles all traditional carriers (Bulgaria Air, Lufthansa, Turkish Airlines, Qatar Airways, LOT, Austrian Airlines) as well as Ryanair flights. It is home to the Sofia Metro station, most car rental desks and a wider variety of retail outlets.

What's coming up (SOF Connect Projects)?

The Consortium SOF Connect, which operates the airport, is undergoing a major modernization. The renovation of the shopping areas and baggage check-in system at Terminal 2 is already underway. The largest project is the construction of an entirely new, ultra-modern Terminal 3, scheduled for completion by 2030. Once it is put into operation, the old Terminal 1 will cease to serve passenger flights.

Sofia Airport Amenities: Shops, Restaurants and Services

If you have time before your flight or have just landed and need a refreshment, the airport offers several good options.

  • Currency exchange and ATMs: The Bulgarian currency is the lev (BGN). There are several exchange offices and ATMs at the airport. It is advisable to withdraw a small amount of cash from an ATM, as the exchange rates at the airport are usually less favorable than those at banks in Sofia or Bansko.
  • Mobile services and SIM cards: If you are coming from a country outside the EU, you can purchase a prepaid SIM card of a Bulgarian operator (A1, Yettel or Vivacom) from the newspaper kiosks (e.g. Relay) in the arrivals hall.
  • Food and drinks: At Terminal 2 you will find popular chains such as Costa Coffee and Lavazza, as well as bistros offering sandwiches, snacks and hot drinks.
  • Duty-Free Shops: The shops offer perfumery, alcohol, chocolate products and a rich selection of Bulgarian souvenirs, including the popular products based on Bulgarian rose oil.
  • VIP lounges (Lounges): For business class travelers or cardholders such as Priority Pass, Terminal 2 has the lounges Vitosha and Pliska/Preslav. They offer a relaxed atmosphere, fast Wi-Fi, free drinks and snacks.

How to get from Sofia Airport to Bansko?

The distance from the airport to the mountain resort is about 160 kilometers. The journey usually takes between 2 and 2.5 hours, depending on traffic and winter conditions. The road passes along the Struma (A3) motorway to Simitli, then turns onto a picturesque mountain road through the Predela pass.

1. Private or shared transfer (The most convenient option)

Especially if you are carrying heavy ski equipment, the most recommended way to get to Bansko is a pre-booked transfer. The driver will meet you in the arrivals hall with a sign with your name on it and take you directly to the reception of your hotel.

2. Rent-a-Car

Renting a car gives you the freedom to explore not only Bansko, but also neighboring destinations such as Dobrinishte, Banya (famous for its mineral springs) and Razlog. The arrivals hall of Terminal 2 is home to offices of international brands (Hertz, Avis, Europcar, Sixt) and excellent local companies such as Top Rent A Car.

Attention in winter! When renting a car for Bansko during the ski season (December – March), be sure to ask that it be equipped with quality winter tires. Check that there are snow chains and an ice scraper in the trunk. Although the road through Predela is cleaned regularly, mountain conditions can change abruptly.

3. Traveling by bus

This is the most budget option, but it takes longer. First you need to get from the airport to the Sofia Central Bus Station. From there, regular buses leave for Bansko. The bus journey takes about 3 hours, but you need to take into account the schedule (the last bus usually leaves in the early afternoon).

Transportation to the center of Sofia

If you have a few hours to spare or want to spend an evening in the capital before heading to the mountains, the options are excellent:

  • Metro (Line 4 – Yellow): The metro station is integrated into the Terminal 2 building. The journey to the center (e.g. Serdika station) takes about 20-25 minutes. You can pay your ticket directly by swiping a contactless bank card at the turnstile.
  • City buses: Lines 84 and 184 connect the two terminals with the center of Sofia (stop General Gurko Street). The journey takes about 40 minutes.
  • Fees: The official partner of the airport is the company Yellow Taxi. Their cars are waiting in front of the terminals.
Important security tip: To avoid inflated prices, never accept offers for transportation from random people who approach you inside the arrivals hall. Always order a taxi from the official counters of Yellow Taxi or use their mobile app.

Parking lots at Sofia Airport

If you are traveling by your own car and are looking for a place to stay, the airport offers several options:

  • Outdoor parking (Terminal 1): It is located directly in front of the building and is suitable for both short-term and long-term stays.
  • Multi-storey covered parking (Terminal 2): Directly connected to the terminal, it protects the vehicle from weather influences. It is currently undergoing a phased renovation process, but continues to function.
  • Private alternative parking lots (Park & Fly): There are several private, secure parking lots in the area around the airport (2-3 km away). They are extremely popular with locals as they offer significantly lower prices for stays over 3 days and provide free shuttle service to and from the terminals.

Ski Equipment and Oversized Luggage

Bansko is primarily a winter resort and hundreds of people travel with their own skis and snowboards. Sofia Airport is fully equipped to handle oversized luggage. Upon departure, after checking your equipment at your airline's standard counter, the staff will direct you to a special Oversized Baggage lane. Upon arrival, skis and snowboards are collected at a separate counter in the baggage hall, rather than at the standard revolving lanes.

Final tips for a hassle-free trip

Planning is the key to the perfect Bansko vacation. Always check which terminal your return flight departs from to avoid the stress of last-minute shuttle transfers. It is recommended to be at the airport at least 2 hours before departure, and during peak winter weekends – even 3 hours. Enjoy your flight and welcome to Bulgaria!
