1. The difference between the NRA, the NHIF and the NSI
To navigate the Bulgarian bureaucracy, it is critically important to understand the roles of the three pillars of the financial and healthcare system:
- NRA (Revenue): It collects the money. You pay your taxes and contribute your monthly social security and health insurance contributions with it.
- NHIF (Health): It pays doctors and hospitals for your treatment after you have paid your contributions to the National Insurance Institute.
- NSSI (Social Security): Pays money directly to you. If you become ill and cannot work, if you give birth to a child, if you become unemployed, or when you retire, the National Social Security Institute transfers the funds to your personal bank account.
2. Sick leaves (Temporary disability benefits)
If you work under an employment contract in Bansko or are a self-insured person (freelancer) who has chosen to be insured for general illness and maternity, you are entitled to paid sick leave.
When you get sick, your GP (or specialist) in Bansko issues you an electronic sick leave. The first 2 days of illness are paid by your employer (in the amount of 70% of your daily gross salary). From the third day onwards, the payment is fully covered by the National Social Insurance Institute (in the amount of 80% of your social security income). The money is transferred directly to your bank account, which you must declare to your employer in advance.
3. Maternity benefits (Maternity in Bulgaria)
This is perhaps the biggest plus of the Bulgarian social system, which attracts many young foreign families to Bansko. Bulgaria offers some of the longest and most generous paid maternity leave in the entire world.
What do you get?
- First year (410 days): It starts 45 days before the due date. During these 410 days, the mother receives impressive benefits from the National Social Insurance Institution (NSI). 90% of your gross salary (based on her income from the last 24 months).
- Second year: The mother has the right to stay at home until the child reaches the age of 2. During this second year, the NSSI pays a fixed amount (which is determined annually by the Law on the Budget of the Social Insurance Institution and is usually equal to the minimum wage).
4. Pensions for foreigners in Bulgaria
Bansko is home to a large community of foreign retirees (especially from the UK, Ireland, Israel and Germany). Their relationship with the NSSI depends on where they have worked during their lives.
EU/EEA pensioners
Thanks to the European regulations on the coordination of social security systems, if you have worked in different EU countries, your experience is added up. The National Social Security Institute communicates directly with the pension institutions in your home country. You can receive your European pension directly into your Bulgarian bank account in Bansko.
International agreements (Non-EU)
Bulgaria has signed bilateral social security agreements with a number of non-EU countries (including Canada, the USA, Israel, and after Brexit – special protocols with the UK). These agreements allow the National Social Security Institute to coordinate the payment of your pensions or the recognition of your work experience.

This detailed infographic provides a comprehensive step-by-step guide for foreigners living in Bansko on how to navigate the Bulgarian social security system. It covers prerequisites, choosing a GP, social benefits for EU and third-country nationals, pensions, online services and key contacts, aiming to make the process clear and accessible.
5. Unemployment benefits
If you work under an employment contract in the tourism sector in Bansko (for example in a hotel or on the ski slopes) and your contract is terminated without your consent wine, The NSSI provides you with a “safety net.”.
To receive unemployment benefits, you must have worked and been insured for at least 12 months in the last 18 months. The amount of the benefit is 60% of your average insured income for the last 24 months, and the duration of the payment depends on your total work experience in years (from 4 to 12 months).
Important: To start the process, you must first register with the Labor Office (Employment Agency) in Razlog within 7 days of your dismissal, after which you should submit an application to the National Social Security Institute.
6. NSSI PIC: Your digital key
The Bulgarian administration is digitizing rapidly. The best advice we can give to any foreigner is to get their hands on NSSI Personal Identification Code (PIC). This code is different from the NRA PIK code!
With the NSSI PIN, you can log in to the institute's electronic system and check:
- Have you submitted a sick leave certificate from the doctor and at what stage is it being processed?.
- What is your accumulated insurance experience in Bulgaria?.
- When and how much amount will be transferred to you for maternity or sick leave.
7. Contacts: Where is the National Social Insurance Institute for Bansko located?
Like many other institutions (as we explained in our guide for the municipalities of Bansko and Razlog), The National Social Security Institute does not have a large independent office in Bansko. The territorial division for the district is in Blagoevgrad, but for the convenience of citizens, there is a remote workplace in the town of Razlog (6 km from Bansko).
