Practical advice

What to know
before you arrive

Six key steps for a successful start to your life in Bulgaria.

01
Register with the municipality

EU citizens must register their residence within 3 months. You will need: passport and proof of residence.

02
Get a PLL

Personal Number of a Foreigner — mandatory for bank account, tax registration and most official procedures. Issued by the Ministry of Interior.

03
Health insurance

If you are self-insured, you pay health insurance yourself — about 32–40 BGN/month (2024).

04
Parking and Vehicles

A car with a foreign registration for more than 6 months must be registered in Bulgaria. Third party liability insurance is mandatory.

05
Learn a little Bulgarian

English is widely spoken, but even basic words of Bulgarian are highly valued by locals.

06
Open a bank account

In Bansko itself there are branches of DSK, First Investment Bank (FIB), Postbank and UBB. To open an account you need a Bulgarian National Bank ID card and a foreign passport - a Bulgarian ID card is not required. It is advisable to call in advance, as their opening hours may vary out of season.
